Surnames
were primarily used by the nobility in Scotland around the 12th century;
however, it steadily became necessary to distinguish between ordinary
people other than just their given names and therefore the use of Scottish
surnames increased.
Scottish surnames were not in formal use until the middle of the 18th century and in many parts of the Isles until the 19th century. It is almost impossible to cite any sources for surnames with absolute certainty, even though there are have been many books written on the subject of origins of surnames. I will leave it up to the reader to find out their names origins and do their own research, below you will find links to Scottish surnames from different locations around the globe. |
